The incarnations of « Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoches » are the spiritual leaders of the « Gyalton Kagyu » lineage, a sub-branch of the Karma Kagyu lineage. The 6th Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche, Ugyen Jigme Choekyi, was born in 1908 in the Chungpo Gyalton region, located in Kham, Tibet. He was a disciple of the eminent 11th Kenting Tai Situpa Pema Wangchuk Gyalpo and Dzongsar Khyentse Chokyi Lodro.
The 16th Gyalwang Karmapa honored the 6th Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche by conferring upon him the title of « Khenchen » (great scholar) of the Kagyu lineage, in recognition of his high attainments and erudition. During the 16th Karmapa’s visit to India, the 6th Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche accompanied him and stayed in Sikkim as the Spiritual Master of the late King Tashi Namgyal until his passing in 1970.
In 1983, an auspicious event took place in Gangtok, Sikkim, when H.H. the 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa formally recognized the young Chungpo Gyalton Tulku, aged four, as the incarnation of the 6th Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche. In 1989, he made his first visit to Palpung Sherabling, where he stayed for two years. Following his father’s wishes, he returned to Sikkim to pursue studies, choosing science as his main subject in college and university.
In 2002, in line with his aspirations, S.E Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche returned to the monastic seat of Palpung Sherabling to resume his previous activities. From 2003 to 2006, he was appointed as the Vajra Master of the monastic seat of Palpung Sherabling, taking on the responsibility of guiding rituals and religious activities.
Simultaneously, he deepened his philosophical studies at the monastic college before being appointed as the Principal of the primary school at Palpung Sherabling. Later, in 2014, he entered a traditional three-year retreat at the monastery’s retreat center.
S.E Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche received numerous teachings, oral transmissions, instructions, and initiations from H.H. Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa. For several decades, Rinpoche has been teaching Buddha Dharma in many centers affiliated with Palpung Sherabling Monastery. He officially represents H.H. Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa on official travels and shares a deep connection with him as a heart disciple.
Since 2020, he has been one of the main teachers to transmit the « Discovering the Inner Buddha » study and practice program in France and other European countries.
Receiving teachings from him is akin to receiving teachings directly from guru to disciple. Speaking in perfect English, he imparts each teaching with words of truth filled with kindness and wisdom, in a direct, simple, and compassionate style. Attentive and well-informed about the issues of our century, he is particularly appreciated for his responses to questions from both the young and adults.
